The Good and the Bad of Vaping Instead of Smoking
Vaping has only been around for about a decade or so. It’s believed that the first electronic cigarette was designed in 1963 by a man named Herbert A. Gilbert and today's modern e-cig was invented by Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist, in 2003. The point is that e-cigs are still relatively new and it’s understandable to want to learn more about them, especially if you’re trying to decide if it is something you want to do and if you should just finally make the switch from smoking combustible cigarettes to vaping.
Below we are going to lay out the good and the bad that comes with switching, from there only you can decide which lifestyle is right for you.
7 Pros of Vaping E-cigs
1.) Eliminates the typical stinky smell of cigs - Vaping looks similar to smoking and there is a lot of stigmas that the two are one and the same but this is far from the truth. The two are entirely different things. For one thing, that horrible cigarette smell that clings to smokers and everything they own is not apart of the vape lifestyle. Instead, vapers are walking around smelling like delicious baked goods or fruity aromas making it more socially acceptable. Not having brown teeth and stinky fingers is also a plus.
2.) Live a healthier lifestyle - With traditional cigarettes, there are between 4,000 and 7,000 harmful chemicals. Since e-cigarettes use vapor technology, they expose users to fewer carcinogens. The primary process removes the need to combust anything, resulting in the fewer carcinogens previously mentioned. Quitting combustible cigarettes and having a healthier lifestyle has the possibility of saving you money on health insurance which is an added bonus.
3.) Feeling better - There is an immediate health advantage when cutting out combustible cigarettes. Many vapors who have made the switch from smoking to vaping rave about how much better they feel and how their quality of life has improved over time. It has been reported that after switching vapers noticed coughing had subsided, the skin appeared to be healthier, less irritable behavior, improved sense of taste and smell, and they had more energy.
4.) Saves you money - This does depend on the amount you smoke per day but research by Tobacco Control (Control, 2017) found that throughout the day the average cigarette intake is around 5:
- Smoking – A pack of 20 cigarettes costs around $13 in New York. We can assume that give or take, the average smoker will purchase five packs a week ($65) adding up to around $260 a month or $3120 a year (and pack-a-day smoker will spend even more – $4368, not counting the health-related costs and increased insurance prices).
- Vaping – To purchase an e-cigarette starter kit that will last at least a year, you would have to spend around $50 (update 2018 most Starter Kits are in the $30 range), this will be the most expensive part of vaping. Once you’ve purchased a vape starter kit, you can expect to spend around $15 per week for a bottle of juice (if you vape a lot), $60 a month or $720 a year. (Data Reference Here)
5.) More variety - The greatest pro of vaping is that you can choose your own vaping devices. Being able to customize your set up ensures that you’ll have the best vaping experience that fit your individual wants and needs. Want something low maintenance, they’ve got it. Want maximum flavor there is a set up for that too.
6.) Lots of vape juice options - There are a ton of vape juice flavor options: traditional tobacco, fruits, cereals, breakfast flavors, melons, nuts, berries, soda, etc. More than that, there is a variety of nic levels starting at 0 and going up from there. The combinations are endless so there is definitely something for everyone.
7.) No cigarette butt waste - This is a pro for our environment and in turn a pro for you because you live on this big beautiful planet.
7 Cons of Vaping E-cigs
1.) Nicotine - Nicotine is still addictive. There are options for zero nicotine juices but the majority of options do still contain it. Switching from smoking, you will most likely start at a higher nic level then potentially work your way down.
2.) Dry mouth is common - This happens to everyone, even those who are not vapers. It’s really annoying and can last a few days or so. To prevent you’ll just have to drink more water which is a good thing anyways, right? Vaping and drinking water go hand in hand so if you are not drinking enough then you’ll most likely experience dry mouth at some point.
3.) Dizziness can occur - This is a side effect of vaping just as it is of smoking. It’s due to the consumption of nicotine in high doses. You can feel lightheaded, flushed, and even experience vertigo. If you do begin to feel dizzy after vaping then stop and take a deep breath. Don’t vape again until you are feeling better and the dizziness has gone away fully.
4.) Has potential for allergic reactions - This is one of the big things to be aware of. Because there are thousands of different flavorings that can be used in vape juice it’s common for select juices to include things like chocolate, nuts, or fruits. Another allergy that’s not unheard of is a reaction to the Propylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycerin. If this happens there are e-liquids that contain only one or the other.
5.) Having to maintenance your device - Depending on your set up there will be maintenance. Coil and cotton replacement, cleaning, and other routine things to keep your device up to par and your vape experience at a satisfactory level. Now, this isn’t something that needs to be done every day but it’s good to keep in mind that it will have to be done.
6.) Knowing battery safety - There is no such thing as a battery being made specifically for vaping but there are incidents out there where vapers have misused rechargeable batteries which have resulted in injury and/or damage to the device. We recommend reading up on all that has to do with vaping + batter safety. If you are aware of proper use this shouldn’t be an issue.
7.) Finding the best vape juice - A lot of people will be completely turned off from vaping if, for their first time vaping, they happen to try a vape juice they don’t like. The con here is that finding the right juice takes some patience. There are a variety of flavors, brands, and nicotine options so this step may cost some start-up money but once you find something that you like you're good to go.
Being judged by people - This one is not really a pro or a con. You are going to be judged for both smoking and vaping so the choice really is which one do you want to be judged for. With vaping, you do have the power of knowledge on your side. Most people who are judging the vaping are still pretty clueless as to what vaping actually is. You, having done research, know more about the issue and can overcome others uneducated judgments.
There you have it, a list of the pros and the cons. Hope that this helps you make the right decision for your lifestyle.
